No Motivation To Do Schoolwork

Posted by | August 13, 2014 | School | One Comment

Hello, This semester has been really tough, to a point where I have absolutely no motivation to do any schoolwork. I’m homeschooled, so everything is a little more challenging (which is great really… usually). I’ve been homeschooled since the 1st grade and have never had problems with school. Now I’m in 9th, including doing 10th grade math and 11th grade literature. My mind feels like its gone on vacation as I can never seem to focus. Staying caught up is a struggle, and I find myself getting distracted by little things and I hate it, I feel like my mind has failed me or something. What can I do to correct this? I don’t know how I’ll survive next school year if my issue persists. I’ve talked to my parents about it many times, and all they tell me is “We all have to do things we don’t want to do” I know this… So why can’t I just get my butt in gear and do my work? Thanks

Thanks for reaching out for support. It sounds like you have hit a bump in your schooling where you aren’t as interested anymore, or at least you can’t focus as much as you could before.

You are starting to get to a point in your education where you have to learn a lot, but in a very general way. Instead of getting more time to do what you are interested in you are having to spread yourself out and do everything. Which makes your parents comment correct in that we all have to do things we don’t want to.

However, you can reward yourself for staying on task and finishing your work. You could even make a game for yourself. Time yourself to see how long it takes you to do your math, science, history, etc. Or you could pick your least favorite subject, do it last, and then tell yourself once it’s done you get a reward. Make it something you really want so you can’t have it until you are finished. This will boost your motivation to want to finish so you can go do what you really want to do.

It’s just a time in your life where you are starting to realize what you like and what you do, while having the choice to finish your work or not. You’re becoming more aware of what you are capable of and sometimes that causes slack in some areas.

Don’t worry too much, you have dedication in your DNA if you have been able to be home schooled your whole life! You can do this! Just try and organize your work so that it benefits you and gets completed!

Good luck! Reach out anytime you need support!
