My Friend Has An Eating Disorder

I have this friend who obviously has an eating disorder. She eats less than 800 calories a day and tracks calories and exercise. All she ever talks about is how fat she is and just needs to lose more weight. I am really worried about her but I have no idea what to do. She has told me before if I told anyone she would never talk to me again since I would just being another person breaking her trust. She really needs help and I just don’t know what to do.

Thanks for reaching out to us tonight, it sounds like you care about your friend so much and you just want the best for her. It can be hard to try and reach out for someone when you have the fear of breaking their trust. It’s important to put her needs first before her wants. If she is physically hurting herself on a daily basis and has been struggling for a long time, you might want to think about reaching out only because you don’t want her to continue down this path.

One thing you could try is reaching out to an adult that you trust, maybe a counselor and ask them to talk to her. This way you might not have to involve yourself. Also, give her our number and contact information, it might help her to talk to someone anonymously and reach out for help if she needed to.

You have done such an enormous thing, reaching out and it was the right thing for you to do. You’re a really great friend to look out for her well-being. Don’t forget that you matter too and if you’re feeling like you need help coping, don’t hesitate to reach out for yourself, you are just as important and deserve support.

    Sincerely,
