Meet Our New Summer Intern and Counselors

The BYS team is growing. AJ Staff has joined us as a summer intern. You might have seen him at the BYS Fun Run registration booth handing out T-shirts over the past few weeks. AJ is a 2019 BHS graduate and currently attends Carleton College in Northfield, MN, where he studies psychology and plays baseball. He grew up on the Island and is the youngest of three children. When he was attending BHS, he tutored math at BYS and played varsity golf and varsity baseball. AJ and three other friends recently raised $4,000 for the Black Lives Matter movement by participating in the RUCK Walk — a 40-mile walk around Bainbridge Island wearing 50-pound backpacks. Way to go AJ!

Christy Henderson is a new LMHCA counselor who joined the BYS team earlier this summer. Christy’s love of people first drew her to complete her bachelor’s degree in cultural anthropology and sociology and later completed her master’s degree in School Counseling. Her counseling approach combines motivational, solution-focused, person-centered and existential counseling. When she’s not enjoying the Washington waterfront and mountains you might find Christy with her husband on the Battle Point Park disc golf course.

Helen Burke is a new counselor intern at BYS. Helen is currently working towards her masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Antioch University, Seattle. She has two teenage daughters and has lived on Bainbridge Island since 1997. She has worked with individual and group support for grief and loss in Kitsap County and Seattle, as well as worked with young adults at the Antioch Community Clinic in Belltown.
