How do I cope with a alcoholic parent?
Thanks for writing in. It definitely sounds like you can use support. Having an alcoholic in your life is difficult enough, but when it’s your parent it’s probably overwhelming at times. Keep in mind that you cannot not change anyone else but yourself.
Make sure you are utilizing healthy coping skills including reaching out for support when you need to. Writing about your feelings, exercise, and finding new hobbies are great coping skills to have.
There is also support online at http://www.al-anon.alateen.org/for-alateen . They offer support through online mediums and even locally. It might help to talk with others who are impacted by their family member’s addiction.
